Marin General Hospital Receives an “A” for Patient Safety Spring 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade

GREENBRAE, CA — Today, The Leapfrog Group, a Washington D.C. based organization aiming to improve healthcare quality and safety for consumers and purchasers, released the new Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades. Marin General Hospital was one of only 750 hospitals nationwide awarded an “A” for its efforts in protecting patients and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S. The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections, and other harms among patients in their care.

“The entire Marin General Hospital community is dedicated to providing patients with the utmost in care and safety,” said Susan Cumming, MD, Medical Director of Quality at Marin General Hospital. “We incorporate safety as the first item on every meeting agenda and meet daily to communicate important safety information and concerns. To be recognized with an ‘A’ for patient safety by Leapfrog is truly a testament to the teamwork and tireless efforts of everyone on the team at Marin General Hospital.”

Marin General Hospital’s promise to each patient is to “Keep You Safe ● Heal You ● Care for You,” and we honor this promise through our Operation Safety Program that teaches physicians and employees high reliability and safety tools for improved communication and teamwork. Our Safety Hero Awards provide us with an opportunity to recognize and celebrate any member of our staff that goes out of their way to detect the potential for error, speak up for safety, and/or improve our processes.

“This is the only national rating of how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm and death, such as medical errors, infections, and injuries,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Receiving an ‘A’ Safety Grade means a hospital is among the best in the country for preventing these terrible problems and putting their patients first, 24 hours a day.”

Developed under the guidance of an Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to approximately 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is peer reviewed, fully transparent, and free to the public.
