Healthgrades Ranks Marin General Hospital Among the Nation’s Best Hospitals for Clinical Excellence for Third Consecutive Year

Marin General Hospital placed in the top five percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for outstanding clinical performance

Marin General Hospital announced today it has received the 2016 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ for the third year in a row from Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions by providing comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. This achievement places Marin General Hospitalin the top five percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide evaluated on clinical outcomes.

“Marin General Hospital is deeply committed to ensuring our patients are treated with the highest standard of care,” said Marin General Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Lee Domanico. “Being recognized for the quality of our clinical outcomes for the third straight year is a testament to the collaboration of our clinicians and staff in making sure we fulfill our ongoing goal to address the needs of the Marin community.”

Marin General Hospital is among only 260 hospitals across the country to achieve the Distinguished Hospital Award in 2016.

To be eligible for the award in 2016, hospitals were evaluated by Healthgrades for their performance across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures.

From 2012 through 2014, Healthgrades Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence, as a group, had a 26.5% lower risk adjusted in-hospital mortality rate across 19 procedures and conditions where mortality was the clinical outcome, compared to all other hospitals. During this same period, if all other hospitals performed at the distinguished hospital group level across these 19 procedures and conditions, 158,858 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated at a hospital that achieved the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award had, on average, a 32.0% lower risk of dying from heart failure than if treated at a hospital that did not receive this distinction.

“When it comes to hospital selection, two of the most important questions to consider are where you are most likely to have a complication-free hospital stay and which hospital offers the best chance of survival, both during the hospital stay and in the weeks that follow,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. “Selecting a hospital that has achieved Healthgrades 2016 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence award is one way to be confident that you will receive the right care.”

In addition to receiving the Distinguished Hospital Award, Marin General Hospital also received dozens of specialty awards from Healthgrades last year, including being named one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care™ in 2015. Additional honors were awarded to the hospital for its programs such as cardiac care, neurosciences, critical care, pulmonary, prostate surgery, and gastrointestinal.
