Marin General Hospital Now Offers Gender Reassignment Surgical Procedures

Only North Bay hospital to support physicians’ offices across the country dedicated to specialized gender reassignment procedures

GREENBRAE, CA — Marin General Hospital today announced it has begun offering gender reassignment surgery, making it the only major hospital in the North Bay to support physicians’ offices which perform these specialized procedures. The procedures are performed by plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Thomas Satterwhite, MD, who was recently named to the Marin General Hospital medical staff.

Satterwhite, a plastic surgeon at Brownstein & Crane Surgical Services in San Francisco, is currently working closely with the nursing staff and administration at Marin General Hospital to develop a comprehensive program for these specialized surgical procedures, specifically male-to-female transitions. Satterwhite and the team performed Marin General’s first vaginoplasty mid-September.

Satterwhite anticipates conducting approximately 15 such procedures at Marin General Hospital this year, eventually conducting approximately four vaginoplasty procedures a week to meet demand. He is currently booking seven months in advance for such procedures.

“Staff and physicians are embracing this opportunity to acquire new skills, and we believe our team has the heightened level of sensitivity necessary to care for men and women undergoing gender-reassignment surgery,” said Patrick Bennett, MD, Chief of Staff at Marin General Hospital. “I am very proud of the care that we provide to all patients at Marin General Hospital, particularly as we develop this exciting new program.”

Satterwhite worked with a core team of clinical leaders at the hospital to develop a comprehensive program for multidisciplinary care, including education and training for staff and physicians. Staff from admitting, surgery and nursing units received special training in preparation for their first cases.

Satterwhite has been published extensively and presented nationally and internationally in all aspects of plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery for gender reassignment. Satterwhite completed a residency in plastic/reconstructive surgery at Stanford Hospital and a fellowship in craniofacial surgery in Miami, Florida. Satterwhite’s expertise is in facial feminizing surgery, all aspects of gender reassignment surgery, and the full spectrum of cosmetic procedures (surgical and non-surgical) for the face and body.

“Treating gender reassignment patients at Marin General Hospital is excellent for patient care and allows patients in Marin County and north to receive their surgeries closer to home,” said Satterwhite. “I am impressed by the skill and sensitivity of the staff as we collaborate on these specialized surgical procedures.”
