Marin General Hospital's Dr. Lloyd Miyawaki Honored by Marin Prostate Cancer Information and Support Group

GREENBRAE, CA — Lloyd Miyawaki, MD, Medical Director at Marin General Hospital's Marin Cancer Institute (MCI), has been honored by the Marin Prostate Cancer Information and Support Group with the group's prestigious Physician Award, in recognition of his "invaluable contributions to the prostate cancer community."

The award was presented to Dr. Miyawaki, on March 20th at a meeting of the long-running support group, which has convened at Marin General Hospital every single Tuesday for 23 years and has served over 1200 men during that period. Stan Rosenfeld, the moderator and inspiration for the Marin County Support Group for the past decade, and an individual who has advocated for research and support of patients for two decades made the presentation.

In presenting the award, Rosenfeld said, "Some people look for good bedside manner in a physician; others would rather have an expert in his field. And most feel they have to settle for one or another. This is not so if you have Dr. Lloyd Miyawaki as your doctor-he is truly amazing at both! Marin County is fortunate to have Dr. Miyawaki working for us, and we are delighted to be able to recognize him for his extraordinary service to men with prostate cancer."

Dr. Miyawaki said, "Cancer care is a team endeavor, and while I am honored to be recognized, this is really a tribute to our entire group-and to the patients we serve. Everything we do at the Marin Cancer Institute is centered on the patient. Our goal is to partner with patients and their loved ones to design an individualized treatment plan that is right for them. It's really a privilege to work with patients in this way."

Dr. Miyawaki, a Hawaii native, joined the Marin Cancer Institute in 1997. In addition to serving as Medical Director of MCI he is Medical Director of the MCI Radiation Oncology Department.

Dr. Miyawaki received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, before receiving his medical degree from University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and a Masters of Public Health from the University of California Berkeley. He did his specialty training at UCSF. A board-certified radiation oncologist, he is affiliated with the Seattle Prostate Institute and the PRO+QURA prostate brachytherapy quality assurance program. Dr. Miyawaki is also Assistant Clinical Professor at UCSF.

The Marin Cancer Institute offers a comprehensive program for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of genitourinary cancers. Its survival rates are significantly above the national average, and its services for diagnosis and treatment of prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancer patients are equivalent to those of a university center.

"Our goal is to provide our patients with the highest possible quality coordinated care and timely follow-up in a caring environment with many holistic support services," Dr. Miyawaki said.

Marin General Hospital's Marin Cancer Institute (MCI) is the county's premier cancer treatment center and has attained national recognition for its innovative approach and quality of care. In addition to its three-year Accreditation and Outstanding Achievement Award from The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), the physicians of MCI are one of only 100 cancer practices nationwide to receive QOPI (Quality Oncology Practice Initiative) Certification from the American Society of Clinical Oncologists (ASCO).
