Joseph C Poen MD
About Provider

The guiding principle in Dr. Poen’s career as a radiation oncologist has been to treat each of his patients as he would treat a member of his family. To accomplish this, he tries to understand all of the relevant medical and personal issues a patient may have, delivering quality treatment with care and compassion.

Dr. Poen received his medical degree and radiation oncology training at UCLA, where he earned numerous awards and honors, and published original research. In 1993, he joined the faculty at Stanford University, where he taught radiation therapy to medical students and residents, directed the Gastrointestinal Oncology Comprehensive Cancer Clinic and developed an expertise in stereotactic radiosurgery. In 1999, he became an Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology and the director of the Stanford University Radiation Oncology residency training program.

While at Stanford, Dr. Poen served as principal investigator in radiation therapy clinical research trials, lectured extensively on a range of cancer topics, and authored several medical textbook chapters and peer-reviewed publications on the treatment of brain tumors, soft-tissue sarcomas, pancreatic cancer, rectal cancer and Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

In 2000, Dr. Poen left Stanford University and moved to Marin to continue to care for patients in a supportive environment and to spend more time with his family. When he’s not at work, he enjoys swimming, biking and traveling.
