Passage of Measure R Secures Independent Future for Marin General Hospital

GREENBRAE, CA, November 6, 2014 – Marin voters have approved Measure R with 78% of the vote. “We are grateful for the support of virtually all Marin County community and civic organizations, elected officials and medical caregivers in this election,” says Lee Domanico, CEO. “Passage of Measure R is truly a vote of confidence for the hospital itself, and recognizes the importance of maintaining our ability to provide Marin with the highest possible quality of care.”

Measure R’s passage gave voter approval to the lease (operating agreement) between Marin Healthcare District and Marin General Hospital. Under California law, such periodic approval is required. As outlined in the agreement, revenues from the hospital are required to be reinvested in Marin General Hospital to improve health care services including patient care, new medical equipment, and advanced programs for conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, and improved medical facilities. The lease agreement also requires that the hospital pay Marin Healthcare District sufficient rent to cover Annual District expenses, eliminating any burden on taxpayers.

“In November, 2013, more than 68% of voters passed a bond measure to fund construction of a new, modern, earthquake-safe hospital,” says Domanico. “With this vote, they have guaranteed that the hospital they supported will remain not for profit and locally-governed.”

Marin General Hospital, opened in 1952, offers a wide range of high quality medical, trauma and psychiatric health care services and is now recognized as one of the best independent, publicly owned medical centers/hospitals in the Bay Area. Owned, by the Marin Healthcare District, it is currently leased to the non-profit Marin General Hospital Corporation, which manages the day-to-day operations of the hospital. The non-profit corporation is managed by Marin residents with financial and medical experience who serve without compensation.
